New York Financial Literacy Curriculum for Elementary Students

New York is the first state to require personal finance instruction for every public school student, K-12. The Board of Regents made it official in March 2026: elementary students must be taught by the end of grade 4, middle school by grade 8, and high school by grade 12. Grades 5-12 start with the 2026-27 school year; K-4 follows in 2027-28.

NYSED doesn't mandate a specific curriculum. It publishes grade-banded learning objectives and lets schools and families choose materials and document alignment. Networthy is built against those published objectives, lesson by lesson.

Networthy is building the full K-5 arc. The Grade 5 course is complete and available now, a strong fit for students ages 8-12. Grades K-4 are coming next.

How Networthy maps to the NYSED objectives

Grade 5 is the first year of NYSED's middle band, and its first mandatory year is now. But most current 5th graders were never taught the K-4 objectives, because the K-4 requirement doesn't begin until 2027-28. Networthy solves the catch-up problem by teaching all 14 elementary objectives to mastery rather than assuming them, then advancing 19 of the 23 middle-band objectives in grade 5 alone. The remaining four are end-of-grade-8 expectations sequenced for our middle school courses.
